SOUTH WIND ART AND CULTURAL FOUNDATION
In 1999, South Wind was formed by a group of citizens to erect a panoramic exhibit to depict the people of the South Wind - the Kaw Indians - and the Kaw Lake region. Detailed plans and designs were formulated and funds raised for the first phase of the exhibit which is the horse with rider, with arms outstretched consulting the
'South Wind'. The Kaw Nation and the City of Kaw City were most helpful in providing startup
funds for this project. A parking area and path leading up to the horse were prepared by volunteers and the formal dedication was held in June of 2002.
In 2003, with the assistance of the Kaw Nation, a fund raising event was held. Among other auction items, Todd Whipple, the artist of the South Wind sculpture, donated a bust of the Native American rider.
The Kaw City Area Chamber of Commerce believes the exhibit is an asset to the Kaw Lake area, but needs to be maintained and expanded. The Chamber encouraged the Foundation to became active again. A Board of Directors for South Wind was selected and monthly meetings are now being held. As a registered non-profit, the Foundation can apply for grants to continue the South Wind panorama and also apply for grants for other community projects and activities. The City of Kaw City and the Kaw Nation will be encouraged to be supportive of these endeavors for the betterment of our community.
Directional signage to the city picnic area, marina, and boat ramp were donated
by South Wind in time for the annual Christmas in July celebration this year.
Meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month, at 4:00 pm, at 120 Oak Drive, Kaw City, Oklahoma. All persons interested in supporting South Wind or interested in learning more about possible community projects are invited to attend.
